A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and execution of the country's major public works projects.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” affirmed the national leader.
The official reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term finished the year before. This project was closely associated with his administration's economic goals for the southern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its duties in national works. They were executed at an accelerated speed, defying predictions to be partially launched before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had also fueled ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party called for an urgent suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.
This stoppage was suggested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."
In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and operation of these vital initiatives.
