Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for hours when multiple of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a method that is highly susceptible to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and participants so that these practices become unprofitable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
