Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, identified by intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in hills just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a several access tunnels leading to the site... early reports suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - referred to as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike shows our UK leadership, and resolve to work closely with our allies, to eliminate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey remarked.

British military aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their skill and their valour," he said. "They were among thousands of British personnel stationed over the festive period. This mission, to eliminate militants who threaten our security, highlights how British military are always on standby, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces executed what it termed a "massive strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN estimates IS still has between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
