The Former President's Progressive Alarm Overlooks The Continent's Real Threat: Economic Decline.

The recent US national security strategy presents a misguided assessment of Europe. It claims that open-border policies and so-called "woke" policies represent an grave risk to the continent's identity. However, this perspective rests on a fundamental misreading of the situation. The actual danger facing Europe is not cultural but economic and technological backwardness.

The Stark Growth Gap Between the US and Europe

The data reveal a sobering picture. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, compared to a paltry thirteen and a half percent growth for the EU. Over this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from over three-quarters to just 50% of the American figure. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now has a greater average income than major European economies like Italy and France.

Currently, roughly 50% of the world’s 50 largest tech companies are US-based, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Problem

The growing disparity stems from superior efficiency gains in the US, fueled by breakthroughs and better use of resources. The scene of global tech dominance is decidedly US-centric. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at over $10bn, compared with only fourteen in the European continent.

This disparity raises a pressing question: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, what is the EU stand? Most analysts agree it is largely a two-horse race between the US and China, with European nations starting at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of major reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a genuine unified investment market, a factor that caps the scale of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented regulation hinder European business. A US startup can launch a product under a single set of laws to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a bigger population size, is divided among 27 different national regimes, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was once met with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

Despite these challenges, there are reasons for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have begun to propose serious reform. Key analyses on European competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for major reforms.

With the right incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths could support much higher degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains significant advantages: high-quality human capital, excellent schools and universities, and world-class labs. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these elements could trigger a new wave of venture creation.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in developing next-generation tech, it can still significantly boost productivity by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now faces a critical moment. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, the continent's technological decline has been steady. However, without bold steps to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a rapid and permanent decline in world influence.
