They're Doing to America What They Did within Christianity

The Trump movement's most telling and characteristic occasions – not its most crucial, nor most brutal, nor most threatening, nor most senseless, but perhaps its most illuminating – occurred earlier this fall. During the period of a few weeks, the US president began displaying everyone his designs for an ornate dance hall double the dimensions than the White House and then commenced solo dismantling the East Wing portion to erect it.

He has performed deeds countless times more severe – the existing assessment of casualties from his cuts to international aid is 600,000 and increasing, and this week research predicted his petroleum strategies would kill 1.3 million more. However nothing as distinctive. No previous president would have risked – really, no former commander would have imagined – solo demolishing large sections of the presidential residence to construct a royal-themed celebration hall, with the enthusiastic participation of multiple the nation's most affluent, nearly all of which maintain dealings with public institutions.

We went from 'the meek shall inherit the world' to 'the meek shall die of cholera'

As bewildering as it is to watch the leader attempt to overturn the established notion of democracy and exchange it with its direct contrary, there exists a significant segment within America who might not perceive it entirely new. This includes individuals like us – among senior generations close to half – who were raised within mainstream Protestant traditions.

We have watched over the years as rightwing evangelical churches turned the Jesus we were raised with into the complete reverse of our understanding of him. Essentially, they converted a persona of affection into an icon of animosity who approves exactly the harshness that he criticized in scripture; this has happened more gradually, over decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting via comparable methods, a bewildering emotional blow for numerous individuals.

A Harmful Christianity Gains Ground

Therefore allow me to outline the Christ that I grew up with, because theoretically Christ is the focus of any Christian faith, and since the fastest-growing cadre among Americans could have minimal awareness of him because they identify as atheists or agnostics or nones. I raise no objection with these various perspectives, nor with alternative spiritual paths; but I do think that there are pearls of substantial value within Christian narrative.

It is unquestionably absolutely not the story of a mighty king appearing; rather, a child comes into the world to homeless parents in a garage, who are forced to hastily depart to a different country to escape undercover officers. The baby grows up in humble circumstances, an employed craftsman; his doctrine concerns compassion for fellow humans, specifically for the disadvantaged – and not a sentimental love, but practical compassion, shown by providing food and protecting. The Savior's reaction to hostility is to offer the opposite cheek – not as a demonstration of submissive tolerance, but as a way to educate the aggressor; his crime policy is that if an individual takes your outer garment you ought to provide them your pullover also.

The apparent and direct reality that the Savior of the gospels calls for a kind of extreme compassion concentrated on the poor is what has always made the Christian faith something of a scandalous religion: appealing to the masses, but owing to its inherent radicalness needing to be contained. In the 1950s it was restrained by dilution – Protestantism was so widespread that it practically sanctified existing conditions.

A Battle for the Highest Within Us

Hence I have become encouraged to see the persistent defiance regarding Trump arise during the previous year. It has provided great solace to participate in developing the campaign that has taken to the streets via continuous gatherings, and likely has encouraged electorate to show up in large quantities in the off-year elections. We will need to maintain it, and with identical determination, displaying national flags at every demonstration and calls to the best parts within national heritage.

We will be questioned ... how did you receive the immigrant? Did you receive him and receive them or reject?

The country is optimally secured, essentially, by relationship to the highest in US heritage, exactly as the Christian faith is optimally secured by relationship to that which renders it special and beautiful, particularly the pattern of Christ. In both situations does it mean acting as if the most damaging about the nation and Christian faith never occurred; it means both meekness and belief, a blend that serious US believers should embrace.
